Used Class 8 Sales Climb In May

Sales of used Class 8 trucks shot up in May, according to a new report.

Compared to April, sales jumped 12 percent, reads the latest State of the Industry report from ACT Research.

Also during the month, the average price fell 3 percent, the average vehicle age fell 1 percent and the average mileage stayed flat.

Steve Tam, ACT vice president, noted that the jump was uncharacteristic, with sales typically slowing in May, but offered a possible explanation.

“As owner/operators and smaller fleets in particular exit the industry, inventory continues to increase,” Tam stated. “This is providing remaining fleets with more options than they have had in a long time.”

Compared to May 2022, sales skyrocketed 17 percent, while the average price plummeted 31 percent. The average mileage and age fell 1 and 3 percent, respectively.
