Reports Say David Steiner Favored To Be Next PMG
Multiple media outlets are reporting that FedEx board member David Steiner is the leading candidate to replace Louis DeJoy as postmaster general.
Steiner, who previously ran Waste Management, is expected to be named by the administration and USPS’ governing board as the nation’s 76th postmaster general, according to a May 6 story in the Washington Post. Bloomberg reported the next day that Steiner has been conditionally offered the role, and is currently being vetted.
No official announcement has been made regarding the position, and any nominee still requires formal approval by the USPS Board of Governors, which has a public meeting set for Friday, May 9, at 10 a.m.
Steiner’s reported selection prompted a stern response from the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC). In a May 6 release, the labor union said it “strongly condemns the reported selection” of Steiner, given that he “comes directly from service on FexEx’s board of directors, presenting a clear conflict of interest.”
The previous postmaster general resigned in late March, after announcing his planned departure in February. USPS is currently headed by Acting Postmaster General Doug Tulino.
