Report: Used Class 8 Sales, Average Prices Fell in July

Several indicators for used Class 8 trucks saw a downturn in July, a historically flat period for the market.

Retail volumes were down 10 percent month-over-month, according to data published by ACT Research on Aug. 26. The release did not include specific dollar amounts to provide context to the percentages.

Between June and July, the average price for a used Class 8 truck dropped 1 percent, while the mileage dipped .4 percent. The average age of sold vehicles was down 7 percent month-over-month.

Steve Tam, vice president at ACT, noted that used truck sales traditionally plateau from June to July and that the slow demand is “logical and expected” as the economy cools down from its “torrid pace” over the last two years.

From a macro perspective, the data showed the average sale price was higher year-over-year, while prices have shot up 69 percent since the beginning of the year.
