Report: Trucking Industry Added Jobs in September

The transportation industry added nearly 9,000 jobs in September, a mild but welcome increase after a turbulent August, federal statistics show.

The Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the mild job gains in in an Oct. 6 release. They follow August’s far-less positive results, which saw more than 25,000 transportation jobs vanish due mainly “to a business closure,” according to the release. Yellow filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August.

Along with the almost 9,000 additional workers added to the trucking sector in September, the agency reported an increase of 4,900 jobs in air transportation. Despite these gains, the Labor Department views the transportation/warehousing sector as having “shown little net change over the year.”

When compared to September 2022, transportation/warehousing sector jobs are down 8,700, while trucking-specific jobs fell by 9,000.

Overall employment rose 336,000 in September, while the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.8 percent.
