Report: Tonnage Down 5.4 Percent in March

Truck tonnage fell 5.4 percent in March after rising nearly 1 percent in February, according to one report.

That precipitous tumble was the largest month-over-month drop since April 2020, according to an American Trucking Associations (ATA) report. The year-over-year decrease in March was about the same, taking a 5 percent hit.

Tonnage for the first quarter of 2023 was off about .6 percent compared to the same period in 2022.

“Despite the largest year-over-year drop since October 2020, contract freight remains more robust than the spot market, which continues to see prolonged weakness,” stated Bob Costello, ATA chief economist.
