Report: Time is Now to Move Toward Zero Emissions

As the trucking industry continues its push toward zero emissions, one report recommends fleets stop waiting and take action now.

The industry is entering the “messy middle,” according to a North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) report, referring to the time between now and when zero emission is a reality.

The report emphasizes that any decisions should be made with a realistic understanding of a fleet’s capabilities, and that collaboration with other agencies or entities is critical because “fleets cannot traverse the messy middle on their own.”

For fleets which haven’t taken any steps, NACFE recommends starting with battery electric trucks because they can be “the simplest path forward.”

If battery electric doesn’t work, the report advises trying hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, with other options including natural gas, hybrids, renewable fuels and hydrogen internal combustion engines.

“While the messy middle can be complicated, NACFE does not view messy as bad, but rather sees it as a time where fleets will have to evaluate many options and look beyond just the truck to the infrastructure needed to support that truck,” read the report.
