Pilot Project Sends Rapid Notices for Delayed/Omitted Trips

The Postal Service is testing out a digitized process for transmitting the form for delayed and omitted service to contractors, one that sends the form within hours of the alleged violation.

This pilot program begins testing today in 17 locations, most of them either on the East Coast or the West Coast, according to Mike Melendrez, USPS’ Senior Director of Surface Logistics. It applies to the PS Form 5500-A (Contract Route Irregularity Report).

Under the program, if a trip is listed as late or omitted, a USPS official will send the appropriate form to the contractor directly from the dock via a scanning device. This process should eliminate batching and gives the contractor the opportunity to respond to USPS allegations while the events of the day are still fresh in his or her mind.

The pilot program rolled out June 21 to the following locations:

  • Philadelphia, PA NDC (NASS: 19Z)
  • Middlesex-Essex, MA P&DC (NASS: 018)
