Pennsylvania To Allow Autonomous Vehicles
Autonomous trucks will soon be cleared to navigate Pennsylvania roads.
Gov. Tom Wolf signed a bill Nov. 3 allowing fully autonomous vehicles to operate without someone behind the wheel. The bulk of the bill will take effect in July 2023.
Previously, the state required a licensed driver to at least be behind the wheel of an autonomous vehicle.
The state will begin revising regulations and guidelines governing autonomous vehicles, according to the bill’s text.
“This bill strikes an important balance between the concerns and challenges, while keeping the safety of Pennsylvanians top of mind,” stated Rep. Donna Oberlander, who introduced the bill. “This legislation is a loud and clear message that Pennsylvania continues to support this industry and welcomes the continued growth in this technology sector.”
