NSRMCA: Review Highlights Members’ Strong Safety Record
The National Star Route Mail Contractors Association (NSRMCA) — which represents transportation firms that contract with the Postal Service — wants to reassure the public and Postal Service stakeholders of its members’ strong record of safety, in light of a recent report questioning the safety of the USPS contracted surface transportation network.
A March 1 story in the Wall Street Journal noted that select mail carriers repeatedly violated safety rules, leading to some tragic accidents and causing the Transportation Department to assign them probationary ratings of “conditional.”
NSRMCA has conducted an internal review of its current members — which include nearly every major Postal Service transportation supplier — and found that 97 percent of those rated by the Transportation Department maintained the highest safety rating of “satisfactory;” only two were found to have a “conditional” designation.
“This review demonstrates what has been true since 1935: NSRMCA members are committed to providing the Postal Service with exceptional, reliable, and safe transportation services,” said NSRMCA Executive Director Greg Reed. “We hold our members collectively to a higher safety standard, and applaud the Wall Street Journal’s efforts to hold the rest of the industry to that same standard.”
The trucking company involved in the fatal crash highlighted in the story is not and never has been an NSRMCA member. The Postal Service’s surface transportation network is currently comprised of approximately 1,500 suppliers.
“Safety is the guiding principle of NSRMCA and its members,” Reed said. “We support the Postal Service’s focus on carrier safety and stand ready to ensure that the surface transportation network reflects industry-leading safety standards.”
