N.J. Speeds Up Clean Energy Mandate by 15 Years

New Jersey’s governor accelerated the state’s target year for 100 percent clean energy by 15 years, an aggressive move he says will lead to a greener tomorrow.

Gov. Phil Murphy announced a new set of clean energy efforts Feb. 15 through three executive orders, which includes moving the clean energy target year up to 2035 from 2050.

Relevant to fleets, one of the six pillars announced was allocating $70 million towards “lowering consumer upfront costs for medium and heavy-duty” electric vehicle adoption.

Also, by 2035, all new cars and light-duty trucks sold in the state will be required to be zero-emission vehicles through adoption of the Advanced Clean Cars II rule.

“These bold targets and carefully crafted initiatives signal our unequivocal commitment to swift and concrete climate action today,” stated Murphy.

Neighboring state New York has a similar goal of 100 percent zero-emission electricity by 2040, as well as vouchers for fleets looking to upgrade to zero-emission vehicles.
