Maryland Legislature Enacts Clean Trucks Act
Maryland has become the latest state to pass its own truck emissions standards, with the bill now going to the governor’s desk.
If signed, the legislation would take effect June 1, stating that by December 1, state regulators will “adopt regulations establishing requirements for the sale of new zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles in the state.”
These regulations, when adopted, would affect vehicles beginning with model year 2027, the same timeframe as the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Trucks Plan.
Maryland’s environmental department, along with other state agencies, will conduct a “needs assessment and deployment plan” to examine how the state will be affected by the implementation of the act, as well as determine purchase incentives and other infrastructure information. That report will be submitted by Dec. 1, 2024, according to the legislative text, at which time the state can make changes to the Clean Trucks Act as needed or delay its implementation.
