Louisiana Cyber Breach Exposes Driver Information

Contractors doing business in Louisiana should be on alert after a major data breach of the state’s Office of Motor Vehicles exposed sensitive information.

The attack, announced June 15, likely laid bare data for all driver’s license recipients in the state, including vehicle registration number, social security number, address and driver’s license number.

State officials did not specify whether the attack impacted commercial licenses as well as personal ones.

Thus far, there is no indication that the data has been sold, used, shared or released, according to a June 15 statement from the governor’s office, and the attackers have not contacted the state government.

Those who operate in the state are recommended to take five actions:

  1. Monitor your credit and watch for loans or new account openings

  1. Change all passwords

  1. Request an “Identity Protection Pin” from the Internal Revenue Service

  1. Check your social security benefits

  1. Report any suspected identity theft

The breach stems from an international cyberattack on the MOVEit system, a third-party data transfer service. Oregon’s Department of Transportation was also affected, so contractors doing business there should be equally mindful.
