It’s Official: Postal Service To Eliminate Special Handling

The Postal Service is discontinuing its special handling extra service for fragile items, a change that could potentially save carriers some time on their routes.

A Postal Service investigation revealed that current operational procedures do not support the preferential handling of fragile items, according to the final rule published in the Federal Register on June 1.

The Postal Service cites “the execution gaps that currently exist” with this extra service as the reason for discontinuing it.

The decision to discontinue special handling will not affect live animals tendered to the Postal Service.

The deadline for public comments on the proposed rule change was May 20. The Postal Service did not receive any formal responses to the notice.
