House Committee Passes Truck Parking Bill
A bill expanding truck parking has cleared its first hurdle in the House.
The Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act sailed through the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee on a 60-4 vote May 23, according to congressional records.
Introduced by Rep. Mike Bost (R-Ill.), the bill would provide grants “for projects to provide public parking for commercial motor vehicles and improve the safety of commercial motor vehicle drivers.”
The bill would make $755 million available in grant money for qualifying projects over a three-year period: $175 million for fiscal 2024, $260 million for fiscal 2025 and $320 million for fiscal 2026.
The measure also mandates that the Transportation Department compose regular reports evaluating parking availability and progress made on projects funded through these grants.
A companion bill was previously introduced in the Senate by Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.).
