House Bill Would Provide Truckers Bathroom Access

New legislation would ensure truck drivers can use facility restrooms when picking up or delivering cargo.

The aptly-named Trucker Bathroom Access Act was introduced Dec. 15 by Reps. Troy Nehls (R-Texas) and Chrissy Houlahan (D-Pa.).

The bill would mandate truckers be able to use a business’s restroom if it’s available to customers or employees; businesses would not be required to build  new restrooms.

“American truckers are this nation’s backbone, and we owe them a debt of gratitude for the tremendous contributions they made during the pandemic,” Nehls stated in a Dec. 15 release.

In the same statement, Houlahan pointed out that the bathroom issue could be a deterrent to women joining the trucking industry.

“In response, our new bipartisan legislation will give all truckers, and female drivers in particular, the confidence of having access to a restroom when they deliver goods to businesses and American families,” she stated. “Especially as the trucking industry continues to face employee retention challenges, we must ensure that we provide truckers a working environment that honors their vital role in growing our economy.”
