Gap Between Asking, Auction Values of Sleeper Trucks Grows

Heavy-duty truck values continued to decline in June, with one market report showing a widening chasm between asking and auction prices.

A Sandhills Global assessment indicated a further drop in sleeper truck auction and asking values. Auction values have been declining since April, while asking prices are only now starting to come down from their peak.

Asking prices were 53 percent higher than their auction prices in June, according to the July 14 report. Sandhills says asking values are traditionally slower to react to market trends

The data also showcased that truck age plays a factor in the difference between values, with older models typically having a much wider pricing gap than newer sleeper trucks. For example, 2019 models had a 35 percent gap between asking and auction values, while 2016 models had a 57 percent gap.

Although the used sleep truck asking values are still higher than they were a year ago at this time, all model years displayed a month-over-month decline in June. The Sandhills data shows a 10 percent decline in 2019 sleeper trucks, asking price was down 10 percent, while the same value was down 7 percent for 2016 model year vehicles.
