Fuel Price Surge: Multiple Regions Now Over $6 a Gallon
The average price of a gallon of diesel fuel has spiked by nearly 35 cents over the past week.
The Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported May 2 that the national average for on-highway diesel fuel was nearly $5.51 per gallon, an increase of 34.9 cents from last week’s price of $5.16.
Every region saw a price hike this week. New England had the biggest spike (a whopping 86.1 cents), while California had the smallest (13.5 cents).
California still has the highest diesel fuel prices in the nation, with drivers paying an average of $6.412 per gallon. However, some regions are starting to catch up.
Three other regions besides the Golden State have now joined the $6-per-gallon club: New England ($6.10), Central Atlantic ($6.08), and all of the West Coast including California ($6.02).
Not a single region is below $5 per gallon.
The Gulf Coast has the least expensive diesel fuel at $5.21 per gallon.
To put things in perspective, the national average for this time last year was $3.142 per gallon. That’s nearly $2.37 less than it is today.
