FMCSA Studying Causes of Truck Crashes
Federal regulators are starting to collect information to determine the sources of truck crashes.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will gather data from highway and motor carrier safety programs at the federal, state and local level for the study, according to a Dec. 27 Federal Register notice.
Specifically, the study will identify different data sets to be used to improve the ability to “evaluate future crashes”; “monitor crash trends and identify causes and contributing factors”; and develop safety improvement programs, according to the notice.
After the 2021 Consolidated Appropriations Act designated $30 million to the FMCSA for a study on large truck crashes, the Infrastructure and Investment Jobs Act mandated the study and laid out the guidelines.
The agency is accepting public comments on the matter, which can be submitted online.
