FMCSA Requests $964M for Fiscal 2025

Federal regulators recently submitted their budget ask for the next fiscal year.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) asked for $964 million, a slight increase from its $951.3 million request for fiscal 2024. The agency said its top priority for the next year is to “improve roadway safety to reduce large truck and bus fatalities.”

The budget proposal is split up into two main categories: $438.1 million for motor carrier safety operations and programs, and $526.45 million for motor carrier safety grants.

FMCSA is also asking for $12 million to perform a study on “medium-duty truck crash casual factors” and $43.6 million to accelerate information technology, or IT, modernization.

The agency will also receive $134.5 million as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in advance appropriations.

In total, the Transportation Department is asking for $146.2 billion for its fiscal 2025 budget, including a $62.8 billion ask for the Federal Highway Administration and $1.3 billion for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Proposals are rarely enacted as written, and the request has already encountered pushback along party lines.
