FMCSA Postpones Speed Limiter, Other Planned Rules
Regulators are postponing speed limiters and some other proposed rule changes until 2025.
Any truck weighing more than 26,000 pounds would be required to have a device limiting the vehicle’s speed to an undetermined amount, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) rule which is now planned for release in May 2025.
It had previously been scheduled for June. The initial notice is scheduled to come out in September.
The Department of Transportation’s Spring 2024 rulemaking list also included delays for a few other proposed trucking changes:
A rule proposing revisions to electronic logging devices. Supposed to be released in October, it is now tentatively scheduled for June 2025.
A rule regarding automatic emergency braking in heavy vehicles was pushed from April 2024 to January 2025. This is a joint rulemaking between FMCSA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
A rule governing automated driving systems in heavy vehicles. It will now publish in December after being scheduled for March.
