DOT Pursues Electronic IDs for Trucks

Federal regulators plan to issue a proposed rule before the end of the year requiring commercial motor vehicles to have electronic IDs.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is aiming to release the proposed rule in November, according to details submitted to the Office of Management and Budget. The proposal is one of many that appeared in the Transportation Department’s spring agenda

FMCSA is considering the requirement as a “possible means to improve the effectiveness of the roadside inspection program by more fully enabling enforcement agencies to target their efforts at high-risk operators, while at the same time providing an incentive for safe and legal operations.”

The agency announced it was initiating the rulemaking process for this mandate in November 2022.
