Diesel Prices See Another Double-Digit Spike

The price of a gallon of diesel fuel has jumped more than 11 cents over the past week, following a nearly 35-cent hike the previous week.

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported May 9 that the national average cost of on-highway diesel fuel was $5.623 per gallon. The average price for the previous week was $5.509, while the price for the week ending April 25 was $5.16.

Every region saw a price increase over the past week. New England and the Central Atlantic areas tied for the biggest spike (23.8 cents), while California had the smallest (4.9 cents). However, California still has the highest diesel fuel prices in the nation, with drivers paying an average of $6.461 per gallon.

The Gulf Coast has the lowest diesel prices in the nation at $5.339 per gallon.

By way of comparison, the national average cost for a gallon of diesel this time last year was $3.186 per gallon. That’s $2.437 less than it is today.
