Diesel Prices Decline by 1 Cent Nationally

After skyrocketing for several weeks, diesel fuel prices have declined — but not by much.

The nationwide cost of diesel decreased by 1 cent per gallon during the week of May 9-16, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. However, the average price of $5.613 per gallon is still $2.364 more than this time last year.

Regionally, the breakdown is more complicated, with many regions still paying higher prices, while the price has dropped in three regions over the past week. Those regions are: the Midwest (4 cents), the Gulf Coast (4.4 cents) and all of the West Coast except for California (.9 cents).

New England had the largest increase (9.2 cents), bringing the average price there to $6.43. That region now has the second-highest diesel prices in the country, just behind California. Diesel costs in the Golden State increased by 1.6 cents, raising the average price there to $6.477.

The Gulf Coast currently has the lowest diesel prices in the nation at $5.295.
