Diesel Prices Continue to Spike

The price of a gallon of diesel fuel has increased by nearly 6 cents over the past week.

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported April 25 that the national average cost of on-highway diesel fuel was $5.16 per gallon. The average price for the previous week was $5.101.

Every region saw a price increase. The West Coast — minus California — saw the biggest spike (nearly 7 cents), while California saw the smallest (2.7 cents). However, California still has the highest diesel fuel prices in the nation, with drivers paying an average of $6.277 per gallon.

The only regions below $5 per gallon are the Midwest ($4.987) and the Gulf Coast ($4.916).

To put things in perspective, the national average cost for diesel fuel this time last year was $3.124 per gallon, more than $2 lower.
