DeJoy Announces USPS Deal With DOGE

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has signed an agreement with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to help USPS achieve “further efficiencies.”

DeJoy provided a list of top items he wants DOGE to examine in a March 13 letter to congressional leaders. These include the Postal Service’s retirement assets, workers’ compensation program, “unfunded mandates imposed on us by legislation” and the agency’s regulatory requirements.

Specific to the mandates and regulatory requirements, DeJoy stated these mandates “require the Postal Service to perform costly activities without providing any supporting funding,” with these activities costing between $6 billion and $11 billion annually.

Elsewhere in the letter, DeJoy expressed the view that “the commercial and operating viability of the Postal Service is within arm’s reach,” citing positive numbers seen in the first quarter of fiscal 2025.

“We are continuing to aggressively implement all of our cost-cutting and revenue-growing initiatives to continue down this positive path towards financial self-sufficiency,” he stated.
