California Bans Sale of Gas-Powered Cars by 2035

In a move sure to impact CDS contractors, California has set a 2035 cut-off for the sale of gasoline engines in new cars and light trucks.

The state’s Air Resources Board (CARB) approved the Advanced Clean Cars II rule, which requires 100 percent of new cars and light trucks sold in California to be zero-emission by Jan. 1, 2035.

The rule requires manufacturers to produce an increasing number of zero-emission vehicles each year, beginning with model year 2026. The requirement that year will be 35 percent, reach 68 percent by 2030 before hitting 100 percent in 2035.

The board noted that this regulation covers only new vehicle sales, and will not impact existing vehicles on the road. Those gas-powered vehicles will still be legal to own and drive.
