Calif. Pulls Trigger on Zero-Emission Trucks

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has given a thumbs up to its Advanced Clean Fleet rule, which will require some fleet owners to begin transitioning to zero-emission vehicles in 2024.

CARB gave its approval April 28 after years of consideration, with the goal being a full transition by 2045.

Drayage trucks will be required to start moving toward zero-emission in 2024 and must be fully compliant by 2035. Beginning in 2036, manufacturers will only be allowed to sell zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles.

The rule is projected to save fleet owners $48 billion in total operating costs through 2050, according to the release.

In a scathing response, Chris Spear, American Trucking Associations president and CEO, said “California is setting unrealistic targets and unachievable timelines” and that infrastructure to support the state’s goals doesn’t yet exist.
