Calif. Hosting AB5 Payroll Webinar Tomorrow
California is tackling some of the thorny payroll issues surrounding Assembly Bill 5’s reclassification of workers in a Sept. 13 webinar.
The webinar, which is hosted by the state’s Employment Development Department (EDD), will cover “the latest information updates from the EDD and the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement,” according to a description on EDD’s website.
Assembly Bill 5 — better known as AB5 — makes it significantly harder to classify workers as independent contractors in the state. The 2019 law does so by codifying a three-prong test — often referred to as the ABC Test — before a worker can be considered an independent contractor.
The law is causing headaches in the state’s trucking industry, so much so that California Trucking Association (CTA) petitioned the Supreme Court for a preliminary injunction to keep the law from taking immediate effect. The CTA contends that AB5 will harm carriers and independent owner-operators.
However, the high court declined to hear CTA’s appeal in late June, which enabled the state to start implementing the law.
The two-hour webinar begins at 1 p.m. Eastern Time. It can accommodate another 200 registrants as of this writing.
