Brake Violations Take Hundreds of CMVs Out of Service in One Day

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance recently performed a one-day blitz on brake safety inspections, pulling almost 400 vehicles off the road in North America.

On April 22, 4,569 inspections were performed across the continent, with 398, or 8.7%, of those ending in commercial motor vehicles (CMV) being placed out of service, according to a June 17 CVSA release. That number is down from 2024’s results, which found 570 vehicles with critical violations.

The most common issue found was vehicles meeting the 20% defective brakes criterion, which means at least 20% of the vehicle’s brakes have an out-of-service condition. That accounted for 237 of the 398 CMVs taken out of service.

CVSA’s full-length 2025 Brake Safety Week is scheduled for Aug. 24-30.
