Bill Would Stop Forthcoming EPA Emission Rule

A recent Senate bill would prevent the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from imposing new emission restrictions on light trucks and cars.

The Choice in Automobile Retail Sales (CARS) Act, put forward Oct. 19, would prohibit the EPA from implementing stricter emission standards it proposed back in May that would begin taking effect with model-year 2027.

Introduced by Sens. Mike Crapo (R-Ind.) and Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.), the prospective legislation would also disallow “the use of any specific technology” to regulate emissions from new vehicles or engines.

In a statement, Crapo said that “Americans deserve to have access to affordable, reliable vehicles” and not have their choices restricted.

A counterpart bill was introduced in the House in July. It has yet to receive a floor vote.
