Biden Signs Bill Averting Rail Strike

Legislation ending the brewing freight rail crisis has officially become law after getting the president’s signature.

The bill — which mandates an agreement between railroad operators and workers threatening to strike — was signed by the president Dec. 2.

The Senate passed the bill in a 80-15 vote Dec. 1 after it passed the House the day before, according to congressional records

“Congress’ decisive action ensures that we will avoid the impending, devastating economic consequences for workers, families, and communities across the country,” Biden stated.

The measure, based on a tentative pact established in September between most of the parties, will head off a planned strike that would have taken effect on Dec. 9.

The Senate did not approve a separate resolution with the bill, which would have given rail workers seven days of paid sick leave each year. The measure failed on a 52-43 vote. A 60-vote threshold was required.
