Bicameral Bill Would Give Truckers Overtime Pay

Legislation making truck drivers eligible for overtime pay was recently introduced in Congress.

The Guaranteeing Overtime for Truckers Act would repeal a clause in the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 exempting drivers from overtime pay. In a 2022 Transportation Department report, the agency called on Congress to take action on this issue.

The legislation was introduced Nov. 9 in the House by Reps. Jeff Van Drew (R-N.J.) and Mark Takano (D-Calif.) and in the Senate by Sens. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) and Edward Markey (D-Mass.).

A similar bill was presented in April 2022, but it never made it out of committee.
