Average Diesel Price Back Below $5

Another week of falling prices has brought the national average for a gallon of diesel to $4.964. 

That’s nearly a seven cent decrease from the week prior, knocking the average price below $5 for the first time since August, according to the Energy Information Administration’s report for the week ending September 19.  

Every region of the country saw a decrease, with the Midwest having the largest drop – nine cents – for an average gallon price of $4.995. 

A gallon of diesel in the Gulf Coast now costs $4.690 after a seven-cent decrease from the week prior. The East Coast saw a six-cent drop, putting the average gallon price at $4.889. 

The West Coast remains the most expensive region for fuel, with an average gallon costing $5.612 even after falling close to five cents. 

The Rocky Mountain region had the smallest week-over-week drop — slightly less than three cents — with a gallon costing $4.932. 

California continues to set the mark for the country’s highest prices: each gallon of diesel in the state costs an average of $6.149. Overall, the price of diesel is $1.579 more expensive than a year ago.
