Autonomous Delivery Goes Commercial, Firms Open Texas to Oklahoma Route

Driverless trucking gained another foothold this month, with the launch of the first commercial autonomous lane between Houston and Oklahoma City.

Logistics firm A.P. Moller-Maersk disclosed the development as part of its partnership with autonomous tech firm Kodiak Robotics in an Oct. 5 release.

According to the release, autonomous trucks with 53-foot containers make the 450-mile journey four days a week. A safety driver is behind the wheel for all trips, the companies emphasize.

Each Kodiak autonomous truck has 18 different sensors, with a self-performing evaluation occurring every tenth of a second.

The two companies have been working together since November, making eight trips per week along other commercial routes.
